Stanis Dessy
Stanis Dessy (Arzana 1900 – Sassari 1986) was a prominent Sardinian artist of the 20th century, best known as an engraver and woodcut artist, as well as a painter and sculptor. After studying in Cagliari and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, he pursued a long artistic career during which he participated in major national and international exhibitions and was recognized as one of the leading masters of 20th-century Italian woodcut art.
He founded the School of Engraving in Sassari, which later became the Art Institute, and in 1953 he was appointed Academician of the Academy of Drawing in Florence.
Themes related to nature and rural life are recurrent in his works, but there are also numerous portraits, including those of his daughter Paola, who has also inherited her father’s artistic calling.
A portion of his engravings is housed at the “Anna Marongiu Pernis” Print Room of the University Library of Cagliari.
